Background Investigations

Negative experience: This company mailed my background report without an envelope, just folder together. The letter included personal information, including the property I applied to, reasons for approval etc. Extremely unprofessional and careless. Don't recommend.

Fantastic experience: I applied for a rental home in the greater Portland area and was referred to these guys for my background screening. I’ll be honest it was pretty nerve wracking, and I didn’t love the idea that my entire rental history would be gone through with a fine comb. That being said, I saw the bad reviews left here and felt kind of bad. Cindy & Ash were handling my particular case and got through it in about 4 days. They were responsive when I called and emailed with questions. Nobody here wants to be investigated it, but fwiw I figured I’d leave a 5 star review.

Fantastic experience: Extremely friendly and helpful!

Negative experience: A landlord provided two false but related claims, one of which was very easy to prove to be a lie and the second could have been proven, if they had looked deeper. Since the two claims were dependent on each other, after I provided information on the phone to prove it a lie, I thought it was done. They gave an adverse report anyway and because of this I was denied a place to live. When I called later and asked why they would give an adverse report when I had given them a phone number they could call of an insurance company to easily prove it to be a lie, they said, "It doesn't matter if it is a lie, he still says you owe him money." I said yes, as part of the same claim, that can be shown to be a lie. "It doesn't matter. He says you owe him money" and I was so floored by such a one sided viewpoint I was speechless. And frustrated as almost no matter what I said about how easy it was to prove what he said to be a lie they kept repeating that one sentence over and over. But then I asked "Did you actually call to find out if it was a lie" (and predictably) they said "No, because It doesn't matter anyway as he said you owe him money." However, if they had inquired they would have found he was unable to produce an invoice or a record of him ever billing me. And that would have shown he was lying on this too. If they had checked that is.

Fantastic experience: A very thorough company that gets to the bottom of things quickly. very professional and courteous when communicating concerns or have questions.

Negative experience: No stars (even though I didn't have an option for this). This company has a screener named Ellie who put my last name down wrong and I was denied partially because of it. Luckily I have enough brains to figure out when she sent the verification email to my current complex, it was her putting my name down wrong. All I got from the company was an apology. What about the time I put in to correct your screeners error I don't trust screeners anymore thanks to Background Investigations, Inc.

Negative experience: These people are not human. They are extremely rude and insensitive. I called to see what their screening criteria was...knowing that I have terrible credit. I simply asked for an explanation of things and the girl laughed at my question, wouldn't let me talk, interrupted me, tried to talk to me as if I have 0 value, based on a credit application. She didn't know my story, the tragedy that my family faced. I own that I got myself into a bad place with credit, after the mother of my kids died in a car accident. I should have paid my credit cards and tried harder. I understand it's not an excuse to stop living. At the same time, these places are such scumbags they don't care to know people, just judge them as worthless based on 2 years of credit issues. I wouldn't use a complay that doesn't care about human beings to do work for me.
